Interview with American artist - Justin Goby Fields

Justin is an owner / concept artist who studied at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects, and currently works in the film and game industries. He has worked at such studios as Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc., Imaginary Forces , and Sony Imageworks. He is originally from Springfield, Illinois and has worked in the graphic design field since 2005. Some of his credits include: Direct Tv, Jupiter Ascending, Maleficent, Noah, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Firelight, Blink, Falling Skies, The Wolverine, Scrapyard, Eternals, Ragnarock, Tethered Islands, Goosebumps, Max Steel, and Kong. |
Below is our question:
Q: I see you show in the data FB, you set up IRONKLAD in 2013. So Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Maleficent, Noah, Guardians of the Galaxy, Maze Runner.. These works are you personally responsible before IRONKLAD?
Justin: Some of those were freelance, before the creation of IRONKLAD studios.
Q: The following work is that you do it independently? If yes, how much time you need to complete a work?
Justin: The following works include work for film, and personal IP development. Time to finish on these projects varies from time to time.

Q: We understand that the artist has their own personality and the pursuit of, how do you build a dream team?
Justin: Building a dream team is always a difficult task. I like to think of the fellow IRONKLAD artists as family. We have worked together on several projects and have constantly adapted to several work flows. So far it has been an amazing ride.

Q: Leading a group of artists is not very easy, what method you use to manage them so that they can complete the work within the time limit?
Justin: For the time being I am acting as a day to day Art Director. We use a few time management programs to keep us in line.
Q: In the web pages of "About us", you mention in the graphic design field since 2005. Then you are familiar with the application of 3D technology? If you are familiar with the 3d field, is what areas? Create a model? Effects? Or other? What software is that you use most often?
Justin: I have been using Photoshop since 2005 in the graphic design field. In 2010 I began diving into the world of Zbrush. My pipeline includes Keyshot, Zbrush, Photoshop, and Sketch up. However, many of us have various programs in our pipeline.

Q: If you use Zbrush to sculpture your model, do you think it's the most powerful advantages compared with other modeling software is what?
Justin: Pixologic's Zbrush software is without a doubt the best sculpting software in the industry.

Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge of the creative process? How to break through?
Justin: Staying fresh is always hard, it takes constant practice and inspiration to stay relevant. I love buying art books for the studio. So we are constantly surrounded by inspiration.

Q: Have you ever worked in the company, why would you want to set up your own studio?
Justin: I have worked at a few companies, and really enjoyed it. With this studio I want to create a great place for artists call home and grow as artists. A place to push our limits.
Q: What is your favorite type of sculpture? Why?
Justin: Big fan of Spiderzero's work. I enjoy all forms of sculpture, 3d, and traditional.
Q: When you conceived a model, how do you start?
Justin: I begin with looking at the brief and forming an reference sheet.
Q: What method you use to improve your technology?
Justin: Innovation! Never be afraid to mix things up!
Q: Do you think whether to have a good sculpture need to have drawing capabilities?
Justin: I am a firm believer in traditional foundation skills. They make you a better and more rounded artist.
Q: American film industry, is the world's most mature and perfect place, although a lot of opportunities, but also a lot of competition. What do you think are the advantages IRONKLAD? Why can surpass the other competitors?
Justin: IRONKLAD offers an amazing list of extremely talented artists that love the film and game industry. We love what we do and can't wait to someday create our own films and games.
